The Leigh Film Society is a non-profit organisation formed to provide the discerning cinema goer with an alternative to the commercial film that dominates the local multiplexes. The society has been running for over three years screening art house and independent productions, world cinema, and documentaries. Regularly attracting audiences of between 100 and 200 and run solely by volunteers it has created a real community of shared interest.
Screenings take place on a regular monthly basis with additional special events, festival tie-ins and workshops throughout the year. The LFS endeavour to show each of its main features in glorious 35mm but where rarity or unavailability renders this impossible some features may be screened in 16mm or digitally projected. Each main feature is preceded by a short film appropriately themed, where possible.
The LFS also works in partnership with many other local groups, community events, galleries and schools; providing technical advice, screenings and media student support.
Regular attendees and members will be familiar with the brief intermission that takes place halfway through the main feature.
This is due to technical limitations and is to facilitate a changeover of reels on the projector which can currently only cope with a maximum of 6000ft (equivalent to around one hour of programme time) when screening 35mm. This provides everyone with an opportunity for a drink and a chance to discuss the film so far!
Ticket prices are £5 for non-members and £3.50 for members and can be purchased on the door. To receive a free programme and regular updates or to find out how to become a member e-mail or telephone 01702 482396
